For the last century, the automotive industry has been dominated by internal combustion engines as the main powertrain. If one looks at the design of internal combustion engines, there are minimum changes in base mechanical design, and all the major developments/improvements were done in the field of engine electronics, Engine Control Unit (ECU), and exhaust after-treatment system. All the improvements were forced changes, due to the implementation of stringent emission norms worldwide. However, in recent years vehicle powertrains have undergone a major technological change due to the development and adaptation of electric vehicles.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are widely considered the future of the automotive industry due to their higher efficiency, and zero vehicle-level emissions. Over the last two decades, a lot of innovations have been done in the field of EVs such as lithium-ion batteries, Battery Management System (BMS), thermal management and battery insulation, State of Charge (SoC) monitoring, electric motors, power electronics, etc. Currently, the three major research areas for EVs are (a) battery life extension, (b) vehicle range enhancement, and (c) faster battery recharge time.
